With the goal of bringing about change and progress through education, the TMT. The Kannammal Educational Trust was established in 1985 and started the Thai Moogambigai Polytechnic College. Less than three years after his birth, Dr. M.G.R.Engineering College was established in 1988 and Thai Moogambigai Dental College was established in 1991. Both colleges gained Deemed University status in 2003 as Dr. M.G.R.Institute of Education and Research under the University Grants Commission, New Delhi, and the Union Ministry of Human Resources and Development, Government of India, New Delhi.

Residential Accommodation
One of the distinctive features of Dr. MGR Educational and Research Institute, University is its hostels that stand tall and leave no stone unturned in providing a sense of homely feeling, comfort, and security to all the inmates enrolled on its premises. Started in 1987 with separate constructions for Boys and Girls, and located in a serene atmosphere of the Institute's abode, the hostels have a lot to offer for its students who basically come from far-off places to feel and call something their home. The facilities inside the hostels are of high stature and everything is planned and done keeping in mind the student's stay is smooth with heaps of fond and cheerful memories to carry. The boy's hostel has four blocks and each block towers three floors with a total of 570 rooms owing to the majority of male students in the University and the Girl's hostel towers a block with three floors and a total of 360 rooms. Considering the safety of the students, hostels are strategically located within the campus. There is a separate hostel for students pursuing their MBBS at ACS Medical College and Hospital (ACSMCH).

The University Library of Dr.MGR Educational & Research Institute extends the academic research support at all levels and all stages of learning and teaching of the readers. It is supported by different services. The Central Library is located at the Maduravoyal Campus in VOC Block third Floor. The Library has pioneered new services and changed the profile of what a library can do to support Innovation. We are conceiving new ideas that result in a global, collaborative, and interdisciplinary world for knowledge sharing.

The Placement and Training Unit of Dr. M.G.R University was established for the sole purpose of helping the student community place them in industries based on the abilities and abilities of their respective students. In the space of twenty-five years, the Placement unit has experienced exponential growth and success. Students of our University are working not only in India but also abroad with the first step achieved with the help of the Placement Cell. The Placement and Training Unit, in liaison with the departmental coordinators, constantly endeavors to offer curriculum and program changes to improve student knowledge and skills to meet industry expectations. The Cell focuses on training programs for employable candidates, where students are exposed to skills testing, testing psychometric tools before moving on to personality development, interpersonal skills, group presentation and resume writing.
